Labor Day Weekend in San Diego: Your ultimate La Jolla guide

Crowded La Jolla Shores beach with surfers and umbrellas, a popular labor day weekend in San Diego destination

Our 2026 dossier for Labor Day Weekend in San Diego covers the best things to do on the coast and luxury hotel stays in La Jolla for a stylish summer sendoff.

Labor Day Weekend (Sept 5-7 this year) marks the unofficial end of summer, and by Monday evening, local beaches will empty as classrooms fill up for another academic year. But for the three days prior, San Diego will shine, offering the best coastal events and stays to send summer off in style. Looking to make La Jolla your Labor Day home base? Use our guide and compare La Jolla hotels, tours and activities.

Maximizing the final weekend of summer

With a little more than 12 hours of daylight all weekend (and a sunset right around 7:05 pm Sept 5-7), the three-day Labor Day weekend will feature ideal temperatures and a bevy of sunshine. Whether your LDW has you hiking Torrey Pines or Sunset Cliffs, strolling the boardwalk at Mission Beach or simply soaking in the last beach weekend of summer on the sand, the coast will be the place to be.

Beach strategies: Securing sand and fire pits

You’ll find crowds at all La Jolla beaches and across the city of San Diego south through Ocean Beach, with families and groups set up wherever a patch of oceanside land exists. These rank among the best beaches for Labor Day weekend in San Diego.

The early bird gets the [sandy] worm: It’s no exaggeration that parking in La Jolla and across San Diego beach lots will fill up by 9 am each day of Labor Day Weekend, with folks setting up their towels, canopies and umbrellas earlier than you think to ensure all-day access to the best spots. Plan ahead!

The early morning rush at La Jolla Shores

In La Jolla Shores, Kellogg Park and its two comfort stations (bathrooms and showers), along with its premium beach access, is your go-to. You’ll find plenty of lifeguards to watch your swim, a shaded playground and The Map for entertainment. This is the spot for Labor Day Weekend plans with kids.

Rules for using the San Diego beach fire pits:

A La Jolla beach bonfire is a quintessential summer experience for some, but there are caveats.

There are seven fire pits, or fire rings, at La Jolla Shores. The Shores is the only La Jolla beach with fire rings.

There are five fire pits in Mission Beach at Belmont Park; 11 at South Mission Beach; and nine at Ocean Beach. Mission Bay has dozens of fire rings sprinkled throughout.

Fire rings are first-come, first-served. San Diego beach fires can only be built in the concrete fire pits or contained within a portable, propane-fueled device for cooking. Beach fires are not allowed between midnight and 5 am.

Charcoal, clean wood and paper can only be burned in the fire rings – no pallets or trash allowed.

Fires must be attended at all times and extinguished with water (not sand) unless burned out.

Getting on the water: Kayaks and paddleboards

Looking to get off the sand and into the warm water? Book yourself a La Jolla kayaking tour with some of our favorite companies including Everyday California, Bike & Kayak Tours La Jolla, La Jolla Kayak and La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks.

These companies also feature paddleboard and snorkeling tours, allowing you several options to get in or on the water for an unforgettable La Jolla adventure.
