Beach strategies: Securing sand and fire pits

Rules for using the San Diego beach fire pits:
A La Jolla beach bonfire is a quintessential summer experience for some, but there are caveats.
There are seven fire pits, or fire rings, at La Jolla Shores. The Shores is the only La Jolla beach with fire rings.
There are five fire pits in Mission Beach at Belmont Park; 11 at South Mission Beach; and nine at Ocean Beach. Mission Bay has dozens of fire rings sprinkled throughout.
Fire rings are first-come, first-served. San Diego beach fires can only be built in the concrete fire pits or contained within a portable, propane-fueled device for cooking. Beach fires are not allowed between midnight and 5 am.
Charcoal, clean wood and paper can only be burned in the fire rings – no pallets or trash allowed.
Fires must be attended at all times and extinguished with water (not sand) unless burned out.
