The home is the second Helen Copley and Henry Hester project to be nominated, and qualifies under its 1987 period of significance. 

Due to its exemplifying Postmodern style and design by a master architect, the home at 7934 Prospect Pl is now a historic resource.

The San Diego Historical Resources Board made the designation March 27 on consent, meaning there was no opposition and no formal presentation.

Designate the “Helen Copley/Henry Hester House #2,” the property embodies the Postmodern style and retains integrity from its 1987 period of significance, according to the submitted report, mixing two distinct materials, showcasing geometric asymmetry and using bold forms alongside decorative ornamentation.

The resource is also historic as a notable work by Master Architect Henry Hester, illustrating his late design evolution that accommodates postmodern design motifs alongside the needs of an important client.

That important client was Helen Copley, wife of James Copley, a former publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Helen became publisher after James’s 1973 death and carried out significant acts of philanthropy until her own passing.

The 7934 Prospect Pl cottage was Helen Copley’s second guest cottage and the second Copley/Hester house to be designated historic.
