The budget requests, approved by four La Jolla civic organizations, include the groups’ top seven priorities for capital improvements in La Jolla.
As they do annually, four La Jolla civic organizations have jointly signed and sent a letter to San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava, whose District 1 includes La Jolla, requesting budget consideration for several capital improvement projects.
The list, signed by representatives of the La Jolla Community Planning Association, La Jolla Shores Association, Bird Rock Community Council and La Jolla Parks & Beaches and La Jolla resident Janie Emerson, who helped coordinate the lists, prioritizes seven projects that a committee believes require the most attention for the 2027-28 fiscal year.
The top seven requests are:
- Rebuild the La Jolla Shores boardwalk (Walter Munk Way)
- Repave the entirety of Neptune Place in Windansea and repair and upgrade infrastructure and flood control
- Update, repair and maintain storm water systems throughout La Jolla
- Repave the 300 through 900 blocks of Coast Boulevard with concrete
- Replace the broken steps to South Casa Beach and the adjacent wall
- Install automated traffic enforcement systems throughout La Jolla
- Improve pedestrian safety by adding crosswalks for the sidewalk on the west side of La Jolla Shores Drive; upgrading pedestrian signals all over; installing a crosswalk at El Paseo Grande and Camino del Oro; installing pedestrian-activated signal at La Jolla Shores Drive and Vallecitos; and adding or upgrading pedestrian signals on La Jolla Boulevard between Palomar Avenue and Colima Street
Four of the seven items remain on the priority request list from last year. The list has been a joint project of the groups for a number of years.
Also in the letter: a list of seven future projects, in order of priority:
- Install three roundabouts on La Jolla Shores Drive
- Rebuild or replace the chained-off belvedere above Boomer Beach
- Resurface several areas of the Fay Avenue Bike Path
- Repair and refurbish the playground at Starkey Park
- Install additional and larger trash cans throughout tourist areas of La Jolla
- Resurface the walkway and repair or replace the gate and railings at The Children’s Pool
- Conduct a comprehensive traffic study for “The Throat”
The next fiscal year begins July 1; city of San Diego leaders begin budget discussions well ahead of the mayor’s April draft presentation.
