The gate was severely damaged, leading city officials to remove it. No timeline for replacement yet exists, though the seawall remains open as usual.

The metal gate used to close off the Children’s Pool seawall during large swells and high tides has been removed due to damage and will be replaced.

The gate was removed by city of San Diego crew members June 5, city spokesperson Benny Cartwright confirmed, with caution tape in its place.

The gate was “worn out and severely rusted,” Cartwright said.

The city is in the process of replacing the gate, though no timeline yet exists. 

The iconic, 95-year-old seawall remains open as usual, except in times of high tides and large swells.

The seawall was closed for nearly one year after a few of its railings sustained damage during winter storms in 2023.
