The Children’s Pool Beach is one of the most famous, and most misunderstood, stretches of sand in Southern California. Local philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps funded the construction of the iconic concrete seawall in 1931. Her goal: create a calm, wave-free swimming area for local kids. Nature had a different plan.

Today, the protected beach has been claimed by a thriving colony of harbor seals and for half the year, is closed to human activity.

But instead of swimming, visitors are invited to observe these wild marine mammals up close.

During the annual pupping season (Dec 15 through May 15), the sand is completely closed to the public to protect the newborn seals. Visitors can still walk out onto the curved seawall (when the waves aren’t too high) for an incredible, unobstructed view of the seals resting, playing and nursing their young.

The experience:

• The wildlife: You will see dozens of harbor seals hauled out on the sand, rocks or bobbing in the shallow water.
• The seawall walk: Walking out on the concrete breakwater is a thrilling experience. Waves crash dramatically against the ocean side while the seals sleep peacefully on the protected beach side. Stroll to the end for a selfie nearly surrounded by water.
• Photography: Bring a zoom lens. This is one of the best spots in San Diego for wildlife photography.

• Rules: Never harass, feed or attempt to touch the seals. Federal law protects these mammals, so keep your distance and respect the physical barriers.
