First 2025 regional measles case may have exposed some in La Jolla

San Diego County officials are working to identify who may have come into contact with the disease at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines Urgent Care Aug 6 and 7.

San Diego County public health officials have confirmed the first case of measles in the region this year, and those who visited Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines Urgent Care in La Jolla may have been exposed.

The measles case was diagnosed in an unimmunized teenage resident who had recently traveled overseas.

The teenager may have exposed others at the Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines Urgent Care, 10710 North Torrey Pines Rd, from 8:53 pm Aug 6 to 12:26 am Aug 7.

Exposure may also have occurred at Rady Children’s Emergency Department, 3020 Children’s Way in San Diego, from 11:01 pm Aug 6 to 5:21 am Aug 7.

County epidemiologists are working with Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines Urgent Care and Rady Children’s Hospital to identify potentially exposed patients and staff and follow up on their vaccination status. They will also evaluate those exposed for any developing measles.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread easily by coughing, sneezing or being in the same room with an infected person, according to county deputy public health officer Dr Ankita Kadakia.

“Anyone who was at any of the specific locations and at the dates and times listed above should watch for symptoms and call their health care provider if they show any signs of the disease,” she said.

Symptomatic people are asked to call their doctor rather than visiting directly so that infection control measures may be taken to prevent exposure to others.

In 2024, four measles cases were confirmed in San Diego County; all were associated with international travel. As of Aug 4, 19 confirmed measles cases have been reported in California.

“The best way to prevent measles is by getting the measles vaccine,” Kadakia said.
