One was in critical condition at the time of transport; the others were sent with minor injuries. It is not known if they are residents or tourists.
A small boat capsized several yards off the shoreline near the view point at 6000 Camino de la Costa about 4:17 pm Aug 8, leaving five people injured, one critically.
The five were transported to local hospitals. Their current status is not known at this time.
The vessel, a 22-foot cabin cruiser, suffered a motor or mechanical issue while it was close to shore and it entered the surf line, according to San Diego Fire Battalion Chief Erik Windsor, who spoke to lajolla.ca at the scene.
There were five adults on board, all needing rescue. One was in CPR status, Windsor said, while the others suffered minor or moderate injuries.
This was not a smuggling boat, he said; this was a recreational vessel. It is not known whether those aboard are San Diego residents or tourists.
City of San Diego lifeguards “did an amazing job rescuing four lives today,” he said, “in conjunction with the assistance of the fire crews.”
The boat was then pulled by lifeguards and the department’s vessel assist crews away from the surf line “so that it wouldn’t continue to be a hazard” or end up on the rocks, releasing fuel onto the shoreline, Windsor said.
