‘Epic’ King Tide Challenge: Friends and fundraising

The casual yearly event brought in well over $36,000 for cancer research.

Some walked the 11 miles from La Jolla Shores to Cardiff because it was a bucket list goal, others walked part of it to celebrate surviving cancer. In total, hundreds partook in a “walk with friends” that organizer Chris Swanner described as “epic.”

In its fourth iteration, the King Tide Challenge – so named as it is rarely possible when the negative tide is low enough to conquer the coast without getting wet – garnered more than 500 registered walkers, though it’s hard to say the exact number who walked as the event is a casual social gathering, without start lines or medals.

What’s less casual, however, is the amount of money raised for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. Swanner and his team, which includes co-founder Julie Thunder,  more than doubled last year’s figure, raising more than $36,000 this year, and counting.

“That money will keep trickling in” from sponsors, Swanner, a cancer survivor himself, said. “We’re so stoked.”
