Stacking soon: The annual La Jolla Kiwanis pancake breakfast

The 63rd annual event will celebrate local first responders, community and more with food, entertainment and raffle drawings on Saturday, Aug 15.

A sweet community tradition savored by hundreds, the 63rd annual Kiwanis Club of La Jolla Pancake Breakfast is set for 8:30 to 11:30 am Saturday, Aug 15 at the La Jolla Recreation Center.

Now titled the “First Responders Pancake Breakfast,” the event is open to everyone and focused on first responders, with 100% of proceeds from the raffle directly supporting La Jolla’s fire-rescue, lifeguard and police stations.

The entrance ticket includes an unlimited pancake breakfast with beverages; the event also features a bounce house, face painting, pony rides and more, along with engagement with local fire-rescue and police officers and tours of their emergency response vehicles.

The La Jolla Kiwanis Foundation is also looking for prize and gift certificate donations for the raffle, foundation and pancake breakfast Chair President Alexia El Wardani said.

The First Responders Pancake Breakfast is underwritten with proceeds from the Kiwanis Half Marathon, La Jolla Cove Swim and ticket sales from the public at the event.

The refining of the pancake breakfast as a tribute to first responders began three years ago and is now fully realized, El Wardani said, noting the event used to be a fundraiser specifically for Kiwanis but the other events raise enough revenue to fund Kiwanis grants.

The club, then, wanted to gift the pancake breakfast to first responders and their families – who can reserve complimentary tickets at their local stations via electronic signup – along with ensuring the proceeds fund grants for the stations themselves.

“We really just want to help the community in supporting how much we really do appreciate [the first responders] being here,” El Wardani said.

Kiwanis expects to grant nearly $30,000 to local first responder needs, she said.
