The annual event at the La Jolla Recreation Center celebrated community with its usual buffet of food, fun and prizes Aug 16.
Not even the unusual early-morning drizzle kept families from the annual Kiwanis Club of La Jolla Pancake Breakfast Aug 16, a La Jolla tradition since 1963.
The event drew more crowds than in the previous years following the COVID pandemic, club President Bart Calame estimated.
This year’s breakfast, held at the La Jolla Recreation Center, featured, as always, all-you-can-eat pancakes (with gluten- and dairy-free options too), sausage, fruit, coffee, and juice, with people in long lines waiting for their turn to feast.
With many tables seated on the basketball courts, a DJ playing music, a bounce house for children, pony rides, first responder vehicles to explore and more, the breakfast was more than pancakes, serving up a community gathering many said they’d looked forward to all summer.
The Kiwanis Club also hosted its typical raffle drawings, with more than $6,300 in prizes from local companies going to those who participated.
The La Jolla Kiwanis Foundation also presented a $9,446 grant to the San Diego Police Foundation, accepted by San Diego police Capt Tammy Clendenen, who took on the role of Northern Division (which includes La Jolla) captain that day; and Rick Aguilar, who preceded Clendenen in the position through Aug 15.
The grant money will be used for a storage facility for Northern Division, Aguilar said. “I really appreciate everyone’s generosity and giving to the police department. … We will put this money to good use.”
Kiwanis also granted money to the San Diego Fire Department; First responder grants are funded by raffle ticket purchases.
