La Jolla to host Challenged Athletes events Oct 24 through 26

The Challenged Athletes Foundation’s San Diego Triathlon Challenge commences at The Shores, with additional events around La Jolla through the weekend.

La Jolla Cove will once again see more than 175 athletes and hundreds of supporters as it welcomes the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s flagship event, the San Diego Triathlon Challenge fueled by Toyota, Friday through Sunday, Oct 24-26.

CAF aims to provide support for athletes with physical disabilities; the SDTC includes traditional triathlon components, adaptive activities and more in an annual inclusive sports weekend.

The event begins at 9 am Friday, Oct 24 at La Jolla Shores, with ocean- and cycle-based activities.

CAF will host its “Celebration of Abilities Awards” that night at 6 pm at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in The Village.

Clinics and other activities will continue Saturday, Oct 25 at La Jolla Country Day School and the Dan McKinney Family YMCA in La Jolla.

CAF wraps the weekend Sunday, Oct 26 in The Cove, with the triathlon challenge, kids run, Toyota Sports Festival, CAF Village and more.

Partial road closures around The Cove will be in effect Oct 26; look for signage if driving in the area.

The participating athletes include those with visual impairments, spinal cord injuries, limb loss and other mobility challenges. Many of the athletes use adaptive equipment such as racing wheelchairs, handcycles and running prosthetics, most of which is provided through CAF’s grant programs.

“SDTC is one of the most inclusive sports environments anywhere,” CAF co-founder Bob Babbitt said in a press release. “Returning to La Jolla Cove is a homecoming for our community and a launchpad for the life-changing opportunities this weekend makes possible.”
