La Jolla Cove Beach

  • Description

La Jolla Cove is the undisputed jewel of San Diego’s coastline. Tucked between dramatic sandstone cliffs, this small, picturesque cove is a world-renowned destination for its stunning beauty, crystal-clear water and incredible access to marine life.

While the beach itself is small, the experience is immense. The Cove is part of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, a protected marine environment that makes it one of the premier spots for swimming, snorkeling and diving in Southern California. The water visibility is often exceptional, offering a glimpse into the vibrant kelp forests and the bright orange Garibaldi fish that call them home.

Of course, the main attraction for most visitors is the wildlife. The rocks and surrounding areas are famous for the resident populations of sea lions, offering a unique opportunity to observe these charismatic animals in their natural habitat from the sidewalks and staircases.

The experience:

  • The vibe: Scenic and bustling. This is more of a European-style cove for swimming and observing than a wide, sandy beach for sunbathing.
  • Activities: The calm, protected waters are ideal for open-water swimmers. Snorkelers can explore the shallows, while scuba divers have easy access to the deeper parts of the reserve.
  • Photography: This is one of the most photographed spots in San Diego, especially during a La Jolla sunset.

Who it’s for:
Swimmers, snorkelers, wildlife lovers and anyone looking for the most iconic photo in La Jolla.

Good to know:

  • Parking: This is the biggest challenge. Street parking is extremely limited. We highly recommend using a paid garage or consulting our Ultimate La Jolla Parking Guide before you leave.
  • Facilities: Restrooms and showers are available at the top of the cliffs in Ellen Browning Scripps Park.
  • Rules: Due to the marine life, dogs are not permitted on the beach. Alcohol and glass bottles are also prohibited.

Nearby: The Cove is the anchor of The Village. After your visit, you can walk to The Cave Store, explore the Coast Walk Trail or grab a bite at George’s at the Cove.
