The seven sites, noted for their architecture in the annual San Diego Architectural Foundation program, are in La Jolla or at UC San Diego.
It’s once again time for the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s annual Orchids & Onions program and seven properties in La Jolla and at UC San Diego are nominated for “Orchid” awards.
Orchids and onions are awarded to buildings (not people) that enhance (orchid) or degrade (onion) public life, and are nominated by anyone, following guidelines including the buildings must be located within San Diego County or Tijuana.
Last year, the Scripps Park Pavilion/La Jolla Comfort Station was the only La Jolla building to win, out of four nominations in the Zip code.
This year, six nominations fall within 92037:
- 8980 Villa La Jolla Drive; nominated for public architecture.
- Polyhaus’ Tetra-One ADU, 5588 Soledad Mountain Rd; nominated for private architecture.
- Sea + Stone La Jolla Village Apartments, 1111 Torrey Pines Rd; nominated for private architecture.
- Ted and Jean Scripps Marine Conservation and Technology Facility at UC San Diego, 8890 Biological Grade; nominated for public architecture for the second consecutive year.
- Torrey Pines Fire Station, 10281 North Torrey Pines Rd; nominated for public architecture.
- UC San Diego Theatre District Living & Learning Neighborhood, 9165 Theatre District Dr; nominated for public architecture.
Inside UCSD’s 92093 Zip code, the Pepper Canyon West Living Learning Neighborhood, 9610 Gilman Dr, is nominated for public architecture.
The winners, selected by a SDAF jury, will be announced at a gala Thursday, Oct 2.
