  • Description

Named in honor of native Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku, Duke’s brings an infectious Aloha spirit right to the edge of La Jolla Cove. This sprawling, two-story restaurant on Prospect Street offers a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere paired with some of the most spectacular sightlines in Southern California.

Duke’s manages a rare balancing act in The Village of La Jolla. It is spacious enough to accommodate large groups easily, yet the sweeping Pacific panoramas make it a top contender on our list of the best ocean view restaurants. Whether you sit in the main dining room or the lively Barefoot Bar upstairs, the ocean is always the centerpiece.

The menu leans heavily into coastal California and Hawaiian-inspired cuisine. Expect an abundance of fresh seafood, tropical flavors and premium steaks, all served with genuine hospitality.

The menu highlights:

  • Kimo’s Original Hula Pie: You simply cannot leave without ordering this towering slice of macadamia nut ice cream on a chocolate cookie crust, topped with hot fudge and toasted mac nuts.
  • Poke tacos: A fresh, bright appetizer featuring raw ahi, shoyu and Maui onions in a crispy shell.
  • Korean sticky ribs: A savory, highly shareable starter that perfectly sets the tone for a casual meal.

Who it’s for:
Duke’s is the ultimate crowd-pleaser, widely considered one of the most family-friendly options in the area with an upstairs bar also attracting a vibrant crowd looking for craft cocktails and a lively social scene.

Good to Know:

  • Aloha Hour: The Barefoot Bar hosts one of the best happy hours in La Jolla, running from 3 to 5 pm on weekdays. Grab a Mai Tai and watch the famous La Jolla sunset.
  • Reservations: Booking ahead is strongly advised for dinner, especially if you want a table near the glass.
  • Make a day of it: The central location makes Duke’s the ideal lunch spot after a morning spent watching the local seals and sea lions or exploring the historic tunnel at The Cave Store.
  • Parking: Duke’s offers valet parking, which is highly convenient. If you prefer to self-park after browsing the nearby luxury boutiques, be sure to review our playbook on mastering La Jolla parking to secure a spot.
