Happy hour La Jolla style: Where to raise a glass

Happy hour is happiest in La Jolla. Check out our list of where to treat yourself to a drink and a bite.

If there’s a glass in our hand and the ocean breeze in our hair, it’s a happy hour, no matter what the clock says.

“Happy Hour” originated in the early 1900s, when the US Navy scheduled “Happy Hour Socials” for sailors to help them unwind. It’s a habit we’re delighted to continue.

For a truly La Jolla happy hour, whether you’re wine-ing down for the day or looking to rev your engines ahead of dinner, we’ve compiled a list of ten terrific spots in various neighborhoods.

Many of the best happy hour spots in La Jolla are such not only for the food, but also for the views. Wherever you end up, however, just know a La Jolla happy hour means good pours and great service. High tail it to a high-top table or bar today. Cheers!

1. Beaumont’s Eatery

If La Jolla happy hour finds you in Bird Rock, you’re not far from Beaumont’s Eatery on La Jolla Boulevard, where brews and besties pair nicely for an energetic evening.

Happy hour is held daily here, from 4 to 6 pm weekdays and 3 to 6 pm Saturdays and Sundays. So no matter what day you show up, choose from deals on dishes and drinks, including Beaumont’s “cocktail of the week” and sip while swaying to music while the sun disappears.

2. Birdseye Rooftop Restaurant & Bar

Elevate your La Jolla happy hour – literally – at Birdseye Rooftop Restaurant & Bar. This rooftop bar experience is one of the best breezy bar vibes in La Jolla, situated atop the Cormorant Boutique Hotel on the corner of Prospect Street and Girard Avenue in The Village.

Arrive for happy hour between 4 and 6 pm weekdays and complement that view with irresistible deals on beer, wine and cocktails, along with bites as stylish as the company.

3. Duke’s La Jolla

Time flies when you’re having rum … or vodka, or any other spirit at Duke’s La Jolla happy hour. With specials Monday through Friday starting at 3 pm, Duke’s puts on a delicious show at its Village location on Prospect, overlooking the ocean and offering relaxed island fun.

Often paired with music, drink and food specials rotate depending on the day, so be sure to visit Duke’s a few times to ensure you’ve had your fill!

4. Eddie V’s

For a classic spot on Prospect Street in The Village with that incredible view, pop into Eddie V’s La Jolla happy hour, Sundays through Thursdays from 4 pm to 6:30 pm. Find yourself on cloud wine with specials by the glass, or imbibe in hand-shaken cocktails in their intimate, comfortable bar area. And don’t forget their supreme cuisine, offered for happy hour in small bites of Eddie V’s signature dishes and appetizers.

5. Nautilus Tavern

Nestled on La Jolla Boulevard in Windansea is Nautilus Tavern, a go-to spot for sports games, relaxed vibes and live music.

Happy Hour here is daily – yes, daily – from 3 to 6 pm, where wines, drafts, liquor and appetizers are all 50 percent off. Check into the laidback charm and check out of whatever stress you’re feeling!

6. Nine-Ten

At Village mainstay Nine-Ten, in the Grande Colonial on Prospect Street, La Jolla happy hour is held Mondays through Fridays and is steeped in history but also thoroughly modern, with a Michelin Guide menu meant to satisfy.

Try a number of specials at the bar, from specialty cocktails and seasonal food pairings to a wine list sommeliers dream about, all served in an elegant, welcoming atmosphere that’s drawn locals and visitors alike for decades.

7. Public House

If friendly food and an extensive beer list is your definition of the best happy hour, La Jolla will take care of that for you at Public House on Kline Street in The Village, where the tagline “Burgers and Ales” is no exaggeration.

Happy hour, from 3 to 6 pm weekdays, serves up beer and wine specials, along with deals on food items and a rotating menu of sales (like half-off burgers on Tuesdays).

8. Puesto

If you’re looking for a modern, elevated take on tequila, tacos and more, you’re looking for a La Jolla happy hour at Puesto on Wall Street in the Village. Sip a shot of premium agave spirits or clink glasses of artisanal margaritas, palomas and more to experience sass in a glass.

Happy hour at Puesto is from 3 to 5 pm weekdays, where Puesto Perfect margaritas and drafts are on special, along with wines by the glass and half off “snacks and shares” food items.

9. The Shores Restaurant

If the best happy hour La Jolla has to offer is good drinks and a panoramic ocean vista, you’ll want to look into The Shores Restaurant at the La Jolla Shores Hotel. Steps from the sand, the restaurant is among the best in coastal, open-air dining.

Happy hour is held from 2 to 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays, with a menu of deals on small bites and drinks for all, within the inviting, laid-back ambiance The Shores is known for.

10. The Whaling Bar

One of the original La Jolla happy hours, The Whaling Bar at the La Valencia Hotel recently reopened after an 11-year hiatus, reclaiming its place as one of the top La Jolla bars for grabbing cocktails with friends.

The Whaling Bar hosts “Martini Hour” from 4 to 5 pm daily, with selected drinks and scrumptious bites at stellar prices. Cozy up to the reimagined nostalgia in style and enjoy modern takes on truly historical classics.
