Improvement under way at picnic grove in Scripps Park

A fenced-off picnic grove at Scripps Park in La Jolla, undergoing renovations with new surface material. The ocean and a clear blue sky are visible in the background, along with picnic tables, trash bins, and a distinctively shaped tree. A stone plaque is present in the foreground on a grassy lawn.

The existing surface is being replaced with a more durable blend of materials after a 2022 installation deteriorated faster than expected.

A picnic grove in La Jolla’s Scripps Park is undergoing improvements and is currently closed off for the project duration.

The grove opened in late 2022 after upgrades, a new tree and installation of GraniteCrete, a blend of decomposed granite and a binder that functions similarly to cement.

The grove upgrades were a project of La Jolla Parks & Beaches; the site also bears a plaque honoring the late Selma Malk, a longtime resident of La Jolla’s La Valencia Hotel whose family funded the project.

LJP&B is now undertaking the improvements, as the GraniteCrete deteriorated faster than expected; a different mix of GraniteCrete is now being installed, according to city spokesperson Benny Cartwright.

Construction was anticipated to be complete by Friday, March 14, with some additional curing time thereafter, however rain will likely delay the end date.
