The La Jolla Traffic & Transportation Board will ask the city if citizens can pay for parking Ls on Park Row to discourage driveway blocking.

The La Jolla Traffic & Transportation Board voted unanimously to ask the city of San Diego to determine a mechanism for allowing community members to fund the painting of parking Ls on Park Row as a pilot program that meets city guidelines and regulations.

The request, sorted at T&T’s March 18 meeting, came after homeowner Ray Weiss, also a trustee of the La Jolla Community Planning Association, returned to T&T March 18 for formal action after raising the concern in December that his and others’ driveways on Park Row are repeatedly blocked by parked cars. 

Currently, curbs adjacent to each driveway apron are painted red to discourage drivers from blocking driveways but the red is hard to see by a parking enforcement officer if blocked by a parked car. 

Painted Ls on the street several feet out from the end of a red zone would be effective, Weiss said, as they would clarify for drivers where the red zones end and would help parking patrols determine which cars were infringing on the driveway aprons. 

Weiss and T&T board members discouraged ideas to paint the Ls themselves lest the city take legal action.

“What we want is authority from the city to have it done in some way that makes sense,” Weiss said. The city will never do anything unless you provide the resources, because they don’t have any resources.”
