Roll models: Takaramono Sushi now serving La Jolla

Anchoring their combined skills in La Jolla, two experienced sushi chefs have opened up a new restaurant in The Village.

Rice and shine, La Jolla. Takaramono Sushi is serving up inventive presentations of traditional Japanese fare, now open at 7513 La Jolla Blvd.

Takaramono, which means “treasure,” is Eugene Kim and Peter Kim’s offering to San Diego’s “jewel,” Peter said.

“We’re fresh fish with a great experience,” Peter said.

With the best catches from the sea, Takaramono Sushi’s menu includes appetizers, specialty dishes and signature sushi preparations, including creative rolls like the “La Jolla” and “Pearl.”

Takaramono also features a robust shochu and sake list.

Every plate is served with care and precision, skills Eugene and Peter sharpened over years in the industry.

Eugene has been in the food business his whole life, working in restaurants in his native South Korea before taking a job working the front of the house at Yummy Sushi in Coronado.

Peter, also from South Korea, built up experience as a server in college before starting a career in the corporate world. Unsatisfied, he left that role to pursue the culinary arts, winding up as the main chef at the back of the house at Yummy Sushi.

After working together for about seven years, Eugene and Peter decided to take a leap together towards a shared dream of owning their own restaurant.

“We didn’t want to wait till we were older,” Peter said.

Takaramono Sushi opened May 30 and held its grand opening July 6.
