Sun Gold Point: New family diner opening in La Jolla

Run by Bird Rock natives, Sun Gold Point hopes to light up La Jolla Boulevard with clean, quality food built on family recipes.

Solar- and sibling powered, Sun Gold Point is preparing to open at 5632 La Jolla Blvd in Bird Rock, positioning itself as a health-conscious diner blending family and freshness.

Owned by brothers Benny Walter and Stirling Walter, who grew up in Bird Rock, the eatery is named for the La Jolla beach just a half-mile away near the Camino de la Costa staircase, a nostalgic location for the pair.

Sun Gold Point will dish out organic, locally-sourced food, Benny said, full of signature treats and family recipes the brothers grew up eating.

Sourcing local, sustainable ingredients and products is the main driver behind Sun Gold Point, Stirling added.

That effort means a “solid” breakfast with a few stars, Benny said, like a breakfast sandwich on locally-baked bread stacked with a creative sauce arrangement and a breakfast burrito he’s sure will be a hit.

For lunch, the team feels its tri tip sandwich with house seasoning and a salmon bowl/plate combo will be very popular.

Sun Gold Point is open a few hours daily now for coffee samples, merchandise and gift card purchases and visits to check out the gold, teal and wood-accented space; a full open is planned for late July.

Opening a diner is “always something we talked about,” Stirling said, as the brothers have wanted to have a restaurant space of their own: their father, Karl Walter established the longstanding Point Loma Italian restaurant Old Venice in 1980.

“We were raised in a family restaurant,” Benny said.

When the La Jolla Boulevard space became available, the Walter brothers knew it was their chance to start their own spot in San Diego’s food world.

“It is the right timing,” Stirling said.
