La Jolla resident baking up success with The Kitchen Sink

The Kitchen Sink offers homemade treats with everything but gluten.

There’s a new company in La Jolla that promises to satisfy your cravings for something sweet whether you avoid gluten or not.

The Kitchen Sink is a venture by La Jolla resident McKenzie Roman, selling baked goods that are entirely gluten-free.

“My cookies are the best sellers right now,” Roman said, though she also lists cakes, robust nut muffins and more in her repertoire.

“I love to use fresh and seasonal ingredients,” she said. “I try to go to the farmers market, see what’s available and then just go from there.”

This month, her round cake features raspberries and apricots, while the muffins are cherry, lime and almond.

Roman often also takes custom orders for events like engagement parties and fundraisers.

“You need something, I’m going to make it – as long as it doesn’t have gluten in it,” she said.

The Kitchen Sink also has vegan options, including a vegan, gluten-free, nut-free cookie in the shape of your initial with different frosting options. “It’s safe for everyone,” Roman said.

The company’s name derives from Roman’s signature cookie, which she makes with white chocolate chip, apricot and macadamia nut.

“I was throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the cookies, whatever I had in my pantry, which is always fully-stocked” she said.

The name encompasses the cookie’s ingredients and Roman’s baking approach, she said. “It’s ‘The Kitchen Sink – everything but gluten!”

Roman started the company in January, wanting to marry her pre-motherhood experiences working in some of New York’s best kitchens after culinary school with her previous roles in food and beverage public relations, she said.

“And during the pandemic, I renewed my sense of my love of cooking,” Roman added, noting she began making items for her husband, who suffers from celiac disease and cannot have gluten.

Baking “brings me a lot of joy and fulfills my passion,” she said.

Since The Kitchen Sink’s launch, the company has met with growing success, Roman said, leading her to want to branch into wholesale and local coffee shop distribution next year, she said.
