Dozens of dogs scared up a good time.
The third annual La Jolla Dogoween, arguably the largest pet Halloween event in the community, brought dozens of costumed canines out to celebrate Halloween, compete for awards and raise money for local animal rescues.
Dogoween, held Oct 26 and organized by the La Jolla Loves Pets Foundation, moved from its usual location at the La Jolla Rec Center to The Lot this year, where nonprofits raised awareness for their causes as sponsors including top sponsor Deckers Dog + Cat offered information about their services, all while dogs treated their humans to a feast for the eyes.
La Jolla Loves Pets founder Olga Wharton (Fairy Godmother to Cinderella) is passionate about pet rescue and wellness.
“Every dollar we raise” goes to Amazing Strays and K9 Connection Pet Adoption, La Jolla Loves Pets founder Olga Wharton said.
“They work tirelessly,” she said, rescuing dogs from high-kill shelters and searching for fosters and adoptive families.
During the event, furry contestants strutted the red carpet to compete for awards in six categories: Spooky Pups (scariest); Giggles & Wiggles (funniest); Puppy Precious (cutest); Doggy Masterpieces (most creative); Perfect Pairs (best dog and owner); and Pack Stars (best dog group).
There was also a Best in Show award.
Final numbers are not yet tallied, but La Jolla Loves Pets, a volunteer-run 501(c)3 organization, raised $15,000 in 2023 for local animal causes.
