San Diego Design Expo spotlights local artists

The event, spearheaded by La Jolla resident Imogen Baxter and other locals, brings together regional designers.

Curating a community of creatives, the second San Diego Design Expo set up shop Nov 16 in Bird Rock.

Put on by Studio Imogen, run by La Jolla resident Imogen Baxter and Oceanside-based Staging Collective, the 2024 iteration of the expo featured more than 35 exhibitors, drinks, live DJs and acoustic  entertainment all day.

The exhibitors were all from the San Diego and Tijuana regions, showcasing their creations in art, furniture, lighting, textiles, plant and floral design, ceramics and more.

“We really wanted to provide a platform for local artists to show their work,” Baxter said.

The Design Expo also aimed to “bring our communities together and encourage cross border collaboration [to] put artists in front of … art and design enthusiasts or trade buyers,” she said, “the right people … who can really change the trajectory of [the artists’] careers.

San Diego and Tijuana are home to “so much creativity,” Baxter said, but until now there hasn’t been anything like the Design Expo locally.

The first San Diego Design Expo was held last year in the Midway District; this year’s version took place at the incoming La Jolla location of Roam Homeware, opening Nov 30 at 5661 La Jolla Blvd; Roam was one of the Design Expo exhibitors.

Baxter hopes to host the Design Expo annually in La Jolla, she said. “The support from this community has been so amazing.”
