The Susan G. Komen San Diego 3-Day had much of San Diego thinking pink.
A pink wave moved through La Jolla Nov 15 as thousands took part in the annual Susan G. Komen San Diego 3-Day, a fundraiser for breast cancer research that has participants walk more than 55 miles over three days.
Day 1 began at 7 am Nov 15 in Del Mar. By late morning, groups of walkers – most in teams with creative pink outfits – had passed through cheering stations at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and were refueling at Kellogg Park, where medical and massage tents were set up, along with spots on the grass to eat and soak up the sun.
As walkers traversed on, they hit several other La Jolla rest stops, photo opportunities and cheering stations, including one manned by La Jollan Jessi Epperson, who has hosted a cheering station with music, candy, bubbles and more in the Lower Hermosa neighborhood for 10 years.
Epperson, a breast cancer survivor herself, said she’s cheered on the walkers since her 2013 diagnosis as a way to thank those helping to find a cure.
The 3-Day ended in Downtown San Diego Nov 17.
