Fitstop La Jolla: Fortifying the community through fitness

There’s a new workout coming to La Jolla, and its owners are focused on local learning and longevity.

When Fitstop La Jolla opens at the end of May or first week of June at 7547 Girard Ave., it’ll only be the fourth U.S. location out of 152, with locals and married co-owners Cassie and Ryan Gans looking to share the Fitstop mission with as many La Jollans as possible.

The Fitstop method combines strength training, functional fitness and conditioning in a class-with-coach format that teaches members “how to gain strength, how to record their progress and how to always keep getting better every day,” Cassie said.

Members participate in the 50-minute classes in small groups or pairs, cycling through demo, group warmup, workout and cool down components.

By the end of each class, “not only have you gotten a great workout, but … you’re feeling better than you did when you walked in,” Ryan said.

Class emphasis will rotate depending on the day of the week, he added, incorporating lift classes for strength; performance classes for conditioning and endurance; classes to move quickly (“everyone always forgets the heart and the lungs are still a muscle as well,” Ryan said); and classes that blend all formats together.

The Fitstop method is effective for anyone, Cassie said, including those who have followed a program but found themselves at a fitness plateau.

With Fitstop, she said, “you’re always going to be growing and you’re always going to be getting stronger.”

Fitstop also has an invaluable community aspect, Cassie said, as the small team workouts facilitate learning not only how to lift and strengthen but “when it’s good to rest, when it’s good to add more weight and how to spot someone.”

With Ryan’s 15 years of personal training experience in San Diego and Cassie’s eight years of involvement in fitness and community events, “we’re always trying to get people moving,” she said.

“It’s not always about being inside the studio, but also getting to know our neighbors and getting to know what other people like to do for fun and going out and trying everything,” Cassie added.

After learning about Fitstop’s popularity in Australia, Ryan contacted the franchise to learn more.

“It’s always been our goal to have our own gym,” he said, adding it’s been great working with Fitstop and “people who have similar values.”

Ryan and Cassie, through Fitstop, will work to “help everyone be able to move more so they can live more,” he said, noting the workouts are “built for real people to get real results.”

Calling out a “real issue in health and wellness [with] people being too focused on the number on the scale,” Ryan said Fitstop focuses on “how you feel. It’s about becoming stronger, building muscle, feeling … better in your own skin. That’s much more important.”

Fitstop memberships will be managed through the app, with a weekly charge.

Currently, Fitstop La Jolla is offering founding memberships, with a $20 per week discount until opening day.

“When you reserve that founding rate, you also get to come to our two-week soft opening” for unlimited classes, Cassie said.
