Nine sites in La Jolla and at UC San Diego have been nominated for remarkable architecture; voting is open through Sept 17.
The Coast Walk Trail bridge and eight other La Jolla/UC San Diego properties have been nominated for “Orchids” in the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s annual Orchids & Onions program; the public is invited to vote for the People’s Choice award through 11:59 pm Thursday, Sept 17.
Orchids and “Onions” are awarded to buildings (not people) that enhance (orchid) or degrade (onion) public life, and are nominated by anyone, following guidelines including the buildings must be located within San Diego County or Tijuana.
The Coast Walk Trail bridge, recently renovated, is nominated for historic preservation and adaptation, a partnership between the city of San Diego and nonprofit Friends of Coast Walk Trail.
Other La Jolla and UCSD spots nominated are:
- The Adam R Scripps Living Seas Gallery at Birch Aquarium, for interior design.
- Dora Ristorante, for interior design.
- Lucien, for interior design.
- Pepper Canyon West Living and Learning Neighborhood, for public architecture.
- The Torrey Pines Fire Station, for public architecture.
- The Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook at UCSD, for landscape architecture.
- UCSD’s Computer Science & Engineering Building, for interior design.
- The Viterbi Family Vision Research Center at UCSD, for public architecture.
A jury will convene to award Orchids and Onions later this fall. Vote for the People’s Choice award here.
