The project originated with La Jolla residents Brian and Nancy Malk, longtime supporters of UCSD who drove by the overlook site often and saw people gathered on the sidewalk at sunset.

The crowds watching the “stunning view” convinced Brian Malk of the need for a safe, accessible deck, he said.

Improvements to recreational spaces in La Jolla isn’t new to Malk; a few years ago he and his sister, Ann Lipschitz, sponsored the Malk Picnic Grove at Scripps Park, in honor of their mother, Selma Malk, who lived at the La Valencia Hotel for more than 33 years.

The Malk Picnic Grove – which will soon be expanded, thanks to Malk and Lipschitz – “provides a picturesque space where people can gather and enjoy the beauty of our community,” Malk said.

Having lived in La Jolla for more than 47 years, Malk called living in La Jolla a privilege and added he never takes “her beauty or the weather for granted.”

“We live in paradise,” Malk said, adding that witnessing residents and visitors take advantage of La Jolla’s scenery is a welcome reminder of that.

The Malks often watch a group of swimmers in the water who laugh together and share their discoveries of turtles, stingrays and leopard sharks.

“The joy these ladies share is a lovely reminder of how fortunate we are to call this place home,” Malk said.

UCSD further inspires Malk, he said, as it’s become a “vibrant hub for both students and the surrounding community,” elevating La Jolla’s cultural life in many ways,

“To live so close to such an inspiring and inclusive campus is such a treat,” he said.
