Friends of Coast Walk Trail hold bridge ribbon-cutting ceremony

The Nov 4 dedication revealed two plaques in honor of two major donors for the recent repairs, which retrofitted the century-old bridge.

Sporting new railings and more, the bridge on La Jolla’s Coast Walk Trail is pedestrian-ready once again, this time with a new plaque at each end honoring major donors for the repairs.

The bridge on the historic La Jolla trail was closed for two weeks in August for the repairs, which were needed to maintain the century-old connector.

Brenda Fake, Founder & President of Friends of Coast Walk Trail

Nonprofit group Friends of Coast Walk Trail, established to preserve the iconic La Jolla trail, spearheaded the repairs and hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov 4 on the refreshed bridge.

The repairs were funded by donations from the Abrams family, Jonathan Colby, La Jolla Sunrise Rotary and others.

Joyce and Dave Abrams donated in honor of their late son, Matt, and his dog, Elwood, who appreciated the trail as much as Joyce and Dave do, Dave said.

“Joyce and I want to thank all of you for taking the time and effort to be here to share with us the joy of this dedication,” he said.

The northern end of the bridge now showcases a large plaque on an adjacent rock bearing the Abrams dedication; the southern end has a similar rock-and-plaque memorial to Bailey, Colby’s late therapy dog.

Coast Walk Trail and its bridge are landmarks “that people will come to forever and be grateful to just stand right here and feel happy and feel peace and feel this sense of community,” Colby said.

Colby and Bailey – and now his dog, Grace – visit the trail often.

“This spot is so important to us that it’s an honor to dedicate this plaque and this location to [Bailey] for all the hard work that she did in bringing love and compassion and kindness to those that are suffering,” he said.

Coast Walk Trail is a path measuring just over a half-mile, running along the bluffs in La Jolla from Goldfish Point and Coast Boulevard east to Coast Walk. The city of San Diego designated Coast Walk Trail historic in 1990; the trail is also now part of the nationally-designated La Jolla Park Coastal Historic District.

The bridge is on the northern portion of the trail, with an entrance from Prospect Place.
