Over two miles of vast golden sand sit beneath the towering 300-foot sandstone cliffs of Black’s Beach. Located north of La Jolla Shores, this is one of the most secluded, majestic and legendary coastal destinations in Southern California.

Black’s Beach holds a distinct dual identity. The northern portion is managed by the California State Parks department and serves as the most famous clothing-optional beach in the United States. The southern portion is managed by the city of San Diego and strictly enforces clothing-mandatory rules.

Reaching the sand is an adventure. The cliffs cut the beach off from easy access, meaning visitors must hike down to enjoy it. The sheer isolation keeps the crowds thin, leaving the vast shoreline feeling remarkably open and peaceful even during the peak of summer.

• The surf: A deep underwater canyon sits just off the coast. This geological feature concentrates ocean swells, creating some of the most powerful, hollow and world-renowned waves in San Diego.

• The solitude: Because of the difficult access, you can often find large stretches of beach completely to yourself.

Local’s tip:
If you want to avoid the steep, crumbly cliff trails, plan your visit during a low tide. Park at La Jolla Shores Beach and simply walk north along the sand. Check the tide charts before you go so you don’t get trapped by the rising water against the cliffs.

Good to know:

• The access trails: The most popular route starts at the Torrey Pines Gliderport, where a steep, rugged dirt path leads down the bluffs. Always wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Avoid these paths entirely during or after rain, when the sandstone becomes unstable. And we can’t express skill enough: this isn’t for novices.
• No amenities: There are no public restrooms, showers or trash cans on the sand. You must pack out everything you bring in.
