  • Description

The Torrey Pines Gliderport is one of the most historically significant aviation sites in North America. Sitting atop 300-foot coastal cliffs, it is the ultimate vantage point for taking in the sheer scale of the Pacific Ocean.

Whether you are strapping into a harness for a tandem flight or simply grabbing a sandwich to watch others take the leap, the Gliderport offers an energy you will not find anywhere else in Southern California. On a breezy spring afternoon, the sky fills with colorful paragliders and hang gliders silently surfing the coastal updrafts.

It’s a completely free, open-air spectacle that makes a perfect addition to any coastal itinerary.

The experience: Fly or watch

  • Take flight: The Gliderport is world-renowned for its flight school. You can book a tandem paragliding or hang gliding flight with a certified instructor. No prior experience is necessary. You simply run a few steps and let the wind carry you out over the water.
  • Cliffhanger Cafe: You do not have to fly to enjoy the destination. The onsite Cliffhanger Cafe and Bar serves excellent sandwiches, salads, and cold drinks. Grabbing lunch here while watching the gliders is a beloved local weekend tradition.

Local’s tip: Skip the crowded restaurants in The Village for golden hour. The wooden benches at the Gliderport offer arguably the most unobstructed sunset views in La Jolla. Bring a blanket, grab a hot coffee from the cafe, and watch the gliders catch the last rays of the day.

Good to know:

  • Parking: There is a large, free dirt parking lot right at the edge of the cliff. It is one of the easiest places to park in the area, but if you are heading into town later, review our La Jolla parking playbook.
  • Weather-dependent: Flight operations depend entirely on the wind. Always check their website or call ahead to ensure pilots are flying that day.
  • Make a day of it: The Gliderport neighbors the famous Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. You can easily pair a morning of scenic coastal hiking in the reserve with a relaxing afternoon watching the gliders.

If you want to stay close to this elevated, nature-focused side of La Jolla, consider booking a room at the luxurious The Lodge at Torrey Pines or the garden sanctuary at Estancia La Jolla, both located just minutes down the road.
