Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is the wildest, most rugged stretch of land within San Diego city limits. It is a 2,000-acre coastal wilderness that protects the rare Torrey Pine tree, dramatic sandstone cliffs and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds.

For hikers, this is the premier destination in La Jolla. The trails offer sweeping views of the Pacific that are unmatched anywhere else in Southern California. From the wind-sculpted badlands of the Razor Point Trail to the iconic Beach Trail that winds down the cliffside to Torrey Pines State Beach, every step offers a postcard view.

⚠️ Important 2026 advisory:
The reserve is currently undergoing significant infrastructure improvements. Through February, the main park road and upper parking lots are closed to vehicles, along with most of the trails.

• The Guy Fleming Trail: An easy loop with the best ocean overlooks. Perfect for spotting [gray whales] during the winter migration.
• The neighbors: The reserve sits right next to the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course and high-flying action at the Torrey Pines Gliderport.
