Repair of play structure at La Jolla Rec Center unknown

Rec center playground in La Jolla surrounded by caution tape, featuring play structures and a fenced area, with a church and parked cars in the background on a clear, sunny day.

The “aging” structure sustained damage from a car collision.

A damaged play structure at the La Jolla Recreation Center may need replacement instead of just repair.

The structure sustained damage after a car drove into the fence on the Draper Avenue side of the Rec Center playground around 7 am Oct 26.

The driver was a woman, 63, who accidentally jumped the curb and hit a pole, according to San Diego police Lt. Bryan Brecht.

There were no injuries and the incident was not alcohol related.

The play structure has been cordoned off with caution tape since.

“Due to the damage of [the] aging play structure,” city of San Diego spokesman Caleb Olsen said, “and with safety as the city’s top priority, there is a possibility the structure may need to be pulled and replaced.”

The city has already begun to evaluate the structure, Olsen said. “Next steps will be developed upon … completion.”
