The new comfort station, approved at California Coastal Commission July 10, will replace an existing, abandoned one.
The California Coastal Commission approved a project to replace an existing, abandoned comfort station with a new comfort station, install new accessible sidewalks and related improvements and install new utility hookups for park facilities at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.
The project, submitted by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and approved July 10 on consent without formal presentation, will include a new, one-story, 14-foot tall, 750-square-foot building with accessibility upgrades consisting of parking stalls, paved pedestrian paths and site amenities.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve covers about 2,000 acres of beaches, bluffs, uplands, river, lagoon, riparian habitat and wetlands, drawing over three million visitors annually.Â
Construction may disrupt public access to the park, according to the report. State Parks plans to complete the upgrades in two phases, from August to February and again August 2026 to February 2027, to avoid overlapping with the breeding season of the California gnatcatcher, a special status species found in the Torrey Pines Reserve.
