New pedestrian crossing activated on Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla

The pedestrian-activated crossing at 2252 Torrey Pines Rd is now substantially complete and will address safety concerns in the area.

There are now a few more flashing red lights on Torrey Pines Road just southwest of Pottery Canyon Park in La Jolla: a new pedestrian crossing has been installed.

The location at 2252 Torrey Pines Road, which serves as a connector between the La Jolla Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and those who park along the other side of the road, now bears a high-intensity activated crosswalk (HAWK) beacon, with a red light and overhead signage similar to one already in use at Torrey Pines Road near Princess Street.

The new HAWK crossing was activated Dec 3 and is substantially complete, with minor adjustments to be made imminently but fully operational, according to a city of San Diego spokesperson.

The new crossing replaces the former rectangular rapid flashing beacon crosswalk, with signs and a long crossing length accompanied by yellow lights.

In 2022, a car fatally struck a pedestrian at that crossing, two years after the La Jolla Traffic & Transportation Board approved the installation of the HAWK light.
