The blaze, reported to the Watch Duty app Thursday, Jan 23 just before 2:30 pm, was under control by 3:40 pm.

A vegetation fire that broke out on the west side of Gilman Drive and reported on Watch Duty just after 2:15 pm Thursday, Jan 23 has been stopped from progressing further.

Within 90 minutes, San Diego Fire Department crews stopped forward progress on the Gilman Fire via helicopter water drops from and with firefighters on the ground protecting nearby homes.

The fire was about 25 percent contained at 3:44 pm at under two acres, Watch Duty reported. Resources will remain on scene mopping up for four to five hours.

Road closures are still in effect for the area as first responders continue working.

Starting as a 30-foot square vegetation fire “in heavy fuels with a possible structure threat,” the blaze prompted road closures on northbound Gilman Drive at La Jolla Colony Drive and Via Alicante with evacuations of buildings in the immediate vicinity by 2:38 pm.

By 3:30 pm, several witnesses reported on multiple social media sites only light smoke remained.

Evacuations were lifted by 3:51 pm.
