Association for the City of La Jolla seeks more signatures

ACLJ is about 4,500 signatures shy of its goal.

About two months into its three-month drive for signatures to request more information on incorporation, the Association for the City of La Jolla is still looking for support.

ACLJ is looking to ask San Diego County to explore the possibility of La Jolla becoming its own city and needs the signatures of 25 percent of La Jolla’s registered voters to move forward with the request.

The association needs about 4,500 more signatures, with a Labor Day deadline.

La Jolla is currently a community within the city of San Diego, beholden to San Diego’s laws and policies; ACLJ believes incorporating La Jolla into its own city will benefit the entire San Diego region.

The signature gathering effort – if successful – will be part of the ACLJ’s imminent application to the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission, which helps communities incorporate; along with the petition and application, ACLJ will submit its completed Preliminary Comprehensive Financial Analysis, showing the association believes a city of La Jolla is fiscally viable.

LAFCO would then begin its own research into the feasibility of a city of La Jolla.

Previous efforts to incorporate La Jolla the last several decades have “never gone this far,” said ACLJ Vice President Janie Emerson.

Signing the ACLJ request is “not saying yes, you’re in favor of La Jolla being its own city,” she said. “It’s simply asking the county” to assess the effort’s feasibility.

“Let’s get the data … and if it’s doable, then we’ll make a decision,” Emerson said.”If it’s not doable, then end of discussion.”

Those wanting to sign can visit with ACLJ at the following locations:

  • American Pizza MFG from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday
  • Bessell Surfboards from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday

  • The Corner Mercantile from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily

Emerson and other ACLJ representatives can also present information and gather signatures for small groups such as HOAs or other organizations, she said.
