‘Meet Me in Marrakesh’: 78th Jewel Ball raises funds, spirits

With elements of magic and mystique, the 78th annual Jewel Ball invites you to picture yourself in Marrakesh for several good causes.

“Meet Me in Marrakesh” is the theme for the yearly gala, hosted by La Jolla-based philanthropy group Las Patronas, established in 1946 to fund capital items for San Diego-based nonprofits.

This year’s Jewel Ball will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, a “breathtaking, original event … to remember,” said Las Patronas President Julie Garrie at the Jewel Ball preview April 25 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

This year, six major beneficiaries (Adapt Functional Movement Center, Center for Community Solutions, Guide Dogs of America, KPBS, Urban Street Angels and Zoological Society of San Diego) will receive funds for a capital item, including a refrigerated van for meal delivery, a roof over a safehouse, a therapy pool and more.

Several other nonprofit organizations also benefit from Las Patronas with smaller grants.

John Monteith, founder of Adapt Functional Movement Center, is “beyond grateful” for the gift, he said.

Representatives from the five other major beneficiaries also expressed gratitude for their Las Patronas grants.

An “enchanting world” of vibrant colors and exotic ambiance, according to Las Patronas member Sara Carpenter, this year’s Jewel Ball is meant to carry on the 78-year tradition of entertaining as it raises money.

The gala, which takes a year to plan, will create “an atmosphere that truly captures the essence of Marrakesh, said Las Patronas member Ashley Jacobs.
