Read orca ‘bout it: Blue Whale’s owners are opening Killer Whale Creamery in The Village by summer’s start.
Fresh off the several-months’ success of their first La Jolla venture at Blue Whale, Mike Harrison and Dillon Berkabile are set to open Killer Whale Creamery at 7660 Fay Ave. Suite C, in what was formerly Buck’s Meat Market.
Across the street from all-day cafe Blue Whale, Killer Whale will feature artisanal ice cream, made with 19 percent butterfat and offering vegan, coconut-based and hemp milk-based flavors, along with homemade cones and milkshakes.
Just like Blue Whale, Killer Whale will source fresh, local ingredients and focus on quality flavors, Harrison said, incorporating popular Blue Whale items (like the ube pancakes) into its menu.
“It’s all our recipes,” Harrison said, adding the ice cream is all handmade offsite at a co-packing facility.
Killer Whale will also sell pints to go and merchandise, much like Blue Whale.
“I’ve wanted to get into something that’s a little less operational,” Harrison said, “and more scoop-and-serve.”
He envisions customers grabbing a treat after lunch nearby, or on their way to the beach or La Jolla event.
This is Harrison’s first ice cream shop, something he’s excited for, he said. “I like doing new things.”
More Whale family members are coming, Harrison said, noting he’s got his eyes on a few things in La Jolla. “We’re definitely growing.”
