Rain headed to La Jolla for the holiday

La Jolla will be a wet wonderland for Christmas, with an atmospheric river bringing much rain, a flood advisory and a chance for large swells.

A rainstorm is headed to La Jolla Wednesday, Dec 24, bringing heavy precipitation and a flood watch, though lighter rain could develop as early as Tuesday, Dec 23, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavier rainfall from an atmospheric river will develop and spread southward at night Dec 23 into Dec 24, with gusty south winds to 40 mph near the coast.

The rainfall Dec 24 will be moderate to heavy, with the potential for roadway flooding and localized flash flooding.

A flood watch is in effect from late Tuesday, Dec 23 through late night Dec 24.

Steep swells of 7 to 10 feet may occur at La Jolla beaches during the storm.

Rain is likely to continue into Friday, Dec 26.
