The nighttime high tides and early morning low tides will begin over Memorial Day weekend and could make for dramatic viewing at dusk and dawn.
“King” tides are returning to La Jolla Sunday, May 25 through Thursday, May 29, though mostly they will peak overnight.
“King” tides, marked by the extreme differences between the daily high and low tides, will be most noticeable for high tide at dusk Sunday, May 25, as high tide crests at 8:25 pm at 7.1 feet after a 7:48 pm sunset. The low will be at 2:46 am at -1 feet.
The highest tides continue Monday through Thursday, May 26 through 29 at 9:06 pm (7.3 feet); 9:49 pm (7.2 feet); 10:35 pm (7 feet); and 11:25 pm (6.5 feet), respectively.
The lowest tides Monday through Thursday, May 26 through 29 will be 3:34 am (-1.5 feet); 4:22 am (-1.7 feet); 5:12 am (-1.7 feet); and 6:03 am (-1.4 feet), respectively.
With a 5:42 am sunrise May 28 and 29, those low tides will be the most dramatic for a dawn tide pool viewing.
