High surf and flood advisories issued for Labor Day Weekend in La Jolla

The advisories are in effect from 6 am Saturday, Sept 5 through Tuesday, Sept 8, the indirect effects of Hurricane Marie in the eastern Pacific.

Labor Day Weekend could bring more than the last of the summer tourists to La Jolla: the National Weather Service has issued advisories for high surf and coastal flooding starting 6 am Saturday, Sept 5.

NWS expects large breaking waves of six to 10 feet for south and southwestern-facing beaches and four to seven feet for west-facing beaches. Strong and dangerous rip and longshore currents are also predicted, along with minor coastal flooding from a combination of high surf and high astronomical tides.

The conditions, along with a slight chance of rain Sunday, Sept 6, are the indirect effects of Hurricane Marie, currently off the coast of Baja California and not expected to make landfall.

The advisories, in effect for coastal areas from Orange County south through San Diego County, expire at 11 pm Tuesday, Sept 8.
