The La Jolla beach icon gets its yearly glow up thanks to the nonprofit Friends of Windansea.

The Shack at Windeansea Beach is sporting fresh, green palm fronds as part of a yearly effort to keep the La Jolla icon glowing year-round.

The Shack received this first round of glow up (more is coming) May 24, courtesy of Friends of Windansea, a committee under La Jolla Parks & Beaches charged with Shack maintenance and upkeep since the city of San Diego deemed the Shack historic in 1998.

Every year or so, the Shack gets a fresh layer of clean Canary date palm fronds, which start green but will eventually brown as they age, according to Friends of Windansea leader Melinda Merryweather. 

Every winter, caretakers cut a hole in the north side of the Shack’s roof to prevent collapse from winter storm waves. 

The Shack was built in 1946 and serves as a resting spot for surfers and a guard post for lifeguards.
