The new signs are intended to encourage distance from sea lions and remind visitors of wildlife protections.
Two new signs are prominently displayed at La Jolla Cove, months after the city of San Diego began implementing more measures to ease tension between humans and sea lions on the beach.
The signs, placed at each staircase at The Cove, remind people to keep their distance from the sea lions, which haul out, or rest, on the beach but are often the subject of harassment by tourists.
The signs also detail other regulations regarding dogs, drinks and the La Jolla Underwater Park.
The signage attempts to consolidate the other signs in the area and is part of a multilayered plan to decrease sea lion friction while preserving human beach access. Other plan components include stronger Park Ranger presence and messaging, further education and outreach to tour groups.
