La Jolla committee approves city vacation on Desert View Drive

The relinquished city land will become a sidewalk to match what already exists on the street, which overlooks Interstate 5.

An application for the vacation of a public right-of-way between two homes on Desert View Drive in La Jolla will proceed after the La Jolla Development Permit Review Committee approved the project Oct 14.

In a vacation, the city of San Diego relinquishes public property to adjacent landowners.

The public land between 5915 and 5897 Desert View Dr is excess land originally intended for street purposes; the homeowner, who owns both properties and whose children occupy them currently, plans to  put in a sidewalk, applicant representative Jeannette Temple said.

The sidewalk will match what already exists on either side, Temple said. “That way, the neighborhood will feel complete.”

There are no plans for the rest of the vacation.

The land spreading to the east of the homes is now recognized as a Multi-Habitat Planning Area to protect sensitive land and species’ habitats and cannot be developed, preventing the city from converting the right-of-way into a street, Temple said.

DPR trustees voted unanimously to make the application, listed as a preliminary review, a final review; they then voted to approve the project, forwarding it on to the La Jolla Community Planning Association for review.
