Enhance La Jolla would need about $2,500 to trim and beautify the south side of Torrey Pines Road from Amalfi Street to La Jolla Shores Drive.

Enhance La Jolla, a nonprofit established to manage the Maintenance Assessment District, or MAD, for The Village, is looking for donations to fund curbside maintenance on the south side of Torrey Pines Road from Amalfi Street east to La Jolla Shores Drive.

The work, for which Enhance La Jolla already has a vendor bid, would include the cleanup of overgrown plants and other debris along the curb.

“It’s just awful,” Enhance La Jolla President Ed Witt said at the group’s Jan 16 board meeting.

As the MAD and Enhance La Jolla is contracted with and has a permit from the city of San Diego to perform work in the public right-of-way, including landscape maintenance, street and sidewalk cleaning, litter and graffiti abatement and additional trash collection, it can take on the labor. 

But Enhance La Jolla is funded by money meant for maintenance in The Village, and so a project like this must be privately funded. 

Currently, Enhance La Jolla is using an $8,000 donation from a private citizen to clean up La Jolla Parkway from Hidden Valley Road south to Interstate 5.

The section of Torrey Pines Road from Amalfi to La Jolla Shores Drive is “an area that has looked so terrible for so long,” Enhance La Jolla board member Mark Diercks said. “It really needs to be trimmed back, and it would make a huge difference.”

“It’s a shame,” Witt added, “that the city doesn’t do a better job [and] isn’t able to support the community like it should.”

Donations are tax deductible, he said.
