Ullrich’s Monte Vista Avenue house deemed historic

The famed architect built the home in 1925.

The San Diego Historical Resources board designated the home at 7231 Monte Vista Ave, once the home of renowned architect Edgar Ullrich, historic.

The house, called the Edgar and Hazel Ullrich House, received approval for the designation on consent at the HRB’s Nov 21 meeting, meaning there was no presentation and no objection.

The home, which Edgar Ullrich built after moving to La Jolla from Colorado to work on Casa de Mañana, and later many other homes in La Jolla, earned designation as a historical resource with a period of significance of 1925-1926.

The designation excludes the 1938 garage and 1972 addition constructed outside of the period of significance but includes the original 1925 playhouse.

The home embodies the distinctive characteristics and defining features of the Tudor Revival style, according to the city staff report, including a steeply-pitched, cross-gabled roof and stucco bas relief monkeys surrounding the main entrance.

The Barber Tract house is also “a notable work of Master Architect Edgar Ullrich,” the report states.

A second story was added in 1926.

A subsequent Tudor Revival style garage with studio apartment above and a 1972 addition replacing the maid’s quarters are excepted from the designation.
