The existing building at 8081 Calle del Cielo will be razed.

A proposal to demolish a La Jolla Shores home and build a new one seven times the original size gained approval at the La Jolla Shores Planned District Advisory Board‘s Nov 20 meeting.

The Planned District Advisory Board members are mayor-appointed; the board meets once monthly at the La Jolla Recreation Center.

The approved project would demolish the existing 2,217-square-foot, single-story home at 8081 Calle del Cielo and build a two-story, single-family residence over a basement for a total of 15,890 square feet with four parking spaces.

The property setbacks are more than what is required, applicant Claude Anthony Marengo said, with the front setback being nearly 50 feet from the front of the property and a pool in front of the home.

The design meets all city of San Diego guidelines, Marengo said, as well as the covenants, conditions and restrictions of the neighborhood it’s in.

The most unique feature of the design, he said, is the inverted, V-shaped roof, which will allow for maximum sunlight. 

The footprint of the new home will have larger setbacks than required.

Marengo addressed neighbor concerns about the safety of a planned deep light well at the rear of the home by designing a mesh wire cover bolted down atop.

Advisory Board member Kathleen Neil expressed objection to the home’s size, though she commended Marengo for the innovative design.

The request for approval passed 4-2, with Neil and Advisory Board member Janie Emerson opposed.
