La Jolla’s ‘Sandcastle’ property listed for $108 million

Record-breaking listing by the The Dickinson Clark Team boasts the largest shoreline seawall in La Jolla.

Known locally as “The Sandcastle,” the property at 1900 Spindrift Drive in La Jolla is on the market for a record-breaking $108 million, listed by The Dickinson Clark Team.

The 12,981 square-foot, 14-bedroom, 10-bathroom home is worth the nine-digit price tag not only for its unparalleled luxury detailing, according to team co-lead Ross Clark, but also for its inimitable 163 feet of private shoreline space.

The Sandcastle property’s seawall, built in the 1950s before the Local Coastal Program of the 1970s, which dictates larger setbacks from the shoreline, is “significant, because now it’s protected,” said team co-lead Brett Dickinson.

The seawall, the largest such privately-owned structure in La Jolla, can be maintained “in perpetuity,” Clark said.

The listing price, which far exceeds the previous $35 million record for a home sale in La Jolla, also by the Dickinson Clark Team, is further warranted by the littoral luxury throughout the estate.

The current owner bought the original property, 1900 Spindrift, in 2009 and also bought the adjoining  property to assemble what was formerly called “Villa Pelagia.”

The owner then worked to remake the .82-acre lot into a resort-style residence resembling something in St. Tropez or on the coast of Italy, Dickinson said, also calling in details evocative of Petit Trianon on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles.

“No expense was spared from the people that they hired to the materials that they used,” Clark said.

The result is an “unheard of” shoreline property, Dickinson said. “It’s never been done before [and] can’t be done again.”

And with walk-out beach access via a gate, a boathouse, two man made caves at sea level and a “buffer” with the adjacent La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the whole area is “completely irreplaceable,” Dickinson said.

“Here’s the gold,” he said, indicating the private beach below.

Inside the home, the gold standard continues in solid gold leaf accents, New Ravenna mosaics, Thassos glass tile, French chandeliers and more, designed by Timothy Corrigan and architect Drex Patterson.

“It’s a once-in-a-generation type of opportunity,” Clark said. “We feel very confident that we’re going to sell it.”

It’s work that Dickinson and Clark gladly take on to further their investment in La Jolla. Both graduates of La Jolla schools who “grew up staring at that house,” Clark said, the duo are lifelong La Jolla residents, both raising their families here.

“We believe so much in La Jolla,” Dickinson said, noting the team’s sponsorships of “cultural institutions” including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the La Jolla Historical Society and La Jolla Playhouse.

“La Jolla’s got that heritage, but it’s just a quality place to live,” Dickinson said.
