Community planners approved the project in a unanimous vote.
After a full presentation, a proposal to demolish a La Jolla Shores home and build a new one several times the original size gained support at the Dec 5 La Jolla Community Planning Association meeting.
The project would raze the existing 2,217-square-foot, single-story home at 8081 Calle del Cielo and build a two-story, single-family residence over a basement for a total of 12,929 square feet with six parking spaces.
8081 Calle del Cielo is situated in La Jolla Shores with various views from the slope.
The home is on an upward slope, applicant Claude Anthony Marengo said, and the new design will push into that slope and use “the front yard as our backyard to enjoy the recreational views of La Jolla Shores and La Jolla.”
“We’ve tucked ourselves into the hill,” he added, “pulling ourselves further away from the street to compensate for what the height might look like.”
The property setbacks are more than what is required, with the front setbacks being nearly 50 feet from the front of the property and a pool in front of the home, per the neighborhood’s covenants, conditions and restrictions, which Marengo said are stricter than the city of San Diego’s.

The CC&Rs, he said, also dictate the slope of the roof, which he has met but in a “modern style … an inverted flying V” to maximize the use of light.
The slanted roofs will also have solar panels.
Landscape percentages are over the required 30 percent, Marengo said.
The CPA’s motion to approve the project passed unanimously.
