Application filed for eight-unit building on La Jolla’s Cave Street

Previous applications for similar projects on an adjacent lot have been canceled. Local reviews of the current project have not yet been scheduled.

An application has been filed for permits to construct a new, three-story multi-dwelling unit containing eight residential units at 1261 Cave St in La Jolla.

The proposed structure would have one very low income affordable unit, according to the notice, filed Aug 12. The building would include 10,222 square feet of habitable space and a 6,747 square-foot underground garage with parking for bicycles and 12 cars.

The project will also include “adaptive reuse and partial demolition” of a historic resource on the property, called the Lacrosse House, and rear cottage structures, located at 1261 and 1263 Cave St, the notice states.

The applicant, HLLK Architects in Bird Rock, declined to comment or provide renderings.

Local review and a San Diego Planning Commission hearing for the project have not yet been scheduled.

Earlier applications for similar projects at the adjacent, vacant lot at 1271 Cave St have been closed or canceled, city spokesperson Richard Berg said.

One application, filed April 23, 2024, proposed five new duplexes. That application is now closed after the applicant withdrew the project.

Another application for 1271 Cave St, filed Jan 28, proposed two single-dwelling units with two Accessory Dwelling Units; this project was canceled during completeness check due to a lack of response and is now closed.
